H1 Unlimited Racing Great Announces Retirement

The most successful driver in H1 Unlimited history is hanging up his helmet.

Dave Villwock announced his retirement after more than three decades of racing Unlimited hydroplanes. With an unprecedented 68 career victories, 11 Gold Cup crowns and 10 National High Point Championships, Villwock’s career marks will likely never be duplicated.

“After over 30 years of driving these awesome boats it’s time to step away and enjoy some other passions like family, home, and model airplanes,” Villwock said.

Villwock, who made his mark driving Miss Budweiser, said he only committed to driving for the BWR Racing team for one season. He delivered the team its first APBA Gold Cup during the 2025 season with his final race in San Diego, California.

Villwock started working in race team shops in the 1980s before moving into the driver’s seat. A fierce competitor, Villwock was so dominant on the water, it earned him an induction into the 2026 Motorsports Hall of Fame. He will join the Unlimited hydroplane driving greats including the late Bill Muncey and Chip Hanauer as well as former team owner Fran Muncey.

“Dave Villwock’s record speaks for itself,” said H1 Unlimited Chairman Mike Denslow. “He changed how people race these boats and how teams operate. His name will forever be a benchmark in our sport.”
