Channeling the energy of a 38-year version of himself when he started his first performance boat company in 1979, Reggie Fountain bubbled over with excitement as he discussed his new venture, Real Fast Powerboats by Reggie Fountain, with yours truly and PRA publisher Bill Taylor.
“It’s a restart of what I did before except this time I have 32 years experience at it,” said the 70-year-old Fountain with a wide smile. “Hopefully this time we’ll do better and we will last until they bury me.”
Real Fast Powerboats by Reggie Fountain will build offshore performance and fishing boats as well as cruisers on a custom limited-quantity basis using all the technological innovations that he wanted to put into Fountain Powerboats before his unexpected resignation in December, 2010. Real Fast Powerboats’ production facilities will be in both Washington and Bath, N.C.
“Since I work all the time, seven days a week, I might as well use my home as the sales, testing, and delivery office,” explained Fountain.
Real Fast Powerboats will start with a 39’ center console powered by triple 300 hp Mercury Verado outboards and with a 43’ sportboat with twin staggered stern drives. He won’t offer triples in the sportboats because they add more complexity than performance. Fountain plans to add a 32’ center console and a 52’ cruiser as well.
